NY Post, 5/17/99: 38,000 TAKE STEPS vs. AIDS ..... AIDS patient Candido Gonzalez has watched his mother, uncle and two cousins die of the disease, and if it weren't for the annual AIDS walk, which was held yesterday, he might be gone, too. "There's so much energy at the walk, so much love, it really keeps me alive," said Gonzalez. The 35-year-old AIDS educator was one of an estimated 38,000 people who walked over six miles through Central Park and the West Side yesterday to help raise money to fight the disease. The annual event netted $4.2 million in 1998, and Gay Men's Health Crisis, which organized the walk, expected to top that figure this year. Actor Matthew Broderick and former daytime-TV talk king Phil Donahue were co-hosts for yesterday's event, and both addressed the walkers as they assembled in the Sheep Meadow at 9 a.m. Broderick - currently starring in "Night Must Fall" on Broadway and in the new movie "Election: - strayed from his prepared speech to say a heartfelt thank-you to the crowd. "I've lost a lot of really close friends," the choked-up actor said. "I try to do my little bit to help and I'm really glad we're all here today helping as much as we can." GMHC estimates that about 10,000 New Yorkers contract the AIDS virus, HIV, every year, and the Department of Health pegged the number of local AIDS cases in November 1998 at nearly 110,000.

New York Post (4/28/88), Cindy Adams... Seems some small unfriendliness is caroming around Paramount. Seems the company instituted a small spin-off movie-making division under the MTV banner and its new film "Election" with Matthew Broderick, which so far is maybe playing 11 theaters and is getting big-time notices. Seems it is threatening certain Paramount types who have big corner offices and reserved parking spaces. Seems it is causing angst to those who want no other movie company to grow inside their company. Seems.

New York Post (4/8/99) 'Side Man' front & center' Hollywood heavyweights battle over movie rights, by Michael Riedel
(excerpted)   "Side Man" - Warren Leight's acclaimed play about jazz musicians - may be struggling to stay afloat on Broadway right now, but in Hollywood, it's hot, hot, hot. George Clooney, Dustin Hoffman, screenwriter William Goldman, producer Scott Rudin and Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker are all vying for the screen rights, which could fetch more than $1 million. ... Broderick and his wife, Parket, are also in the mix. They'd produce and star in the film - he as the son, she as the mother. "Sarah understands the world of the play," said Leight, though he wondered if any actress could better Edie Falco, who is playing the roll on Broadway.

New York Times (3/19/99) On Stage and Off by Jesse McKinley:     The closing of "Band in Berlin" at the Helen Hayes this weekend has set off rampant speculation about the next tenant at the theater, Broadway's smallest. .... Broadway wags also had "Night Must Fall" which closes at the Lyceum on April 11, in the running. But a spokesman for the show said that Matthew Broderick, the star, was committed to a show at Hartford Stage in May.

New York Newsday (3/18/99) Play by Play by Patrick Pacheco:    Symphony space will feature "Wall-to-Wall Frank Loesser" Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., a celebration of the legendary composer's work featuring Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick (before the evening's performance of "Night Must Fall" in which he's starring) among many others.

Vote for Matthew on White's Guide to the Movies

NY Daily News (3/2/99) - News Beat: B'way pants 'Must Fall' Actor-playwright Emlyn Williams may be spinning in his grave. His "Night Must Fall" thriller, starring Matthew Broderick (in previews at the Lyceum Theater and opening Monday), has added a nude scene at the start of the play. Why? Well, the original 1935 production had a line in which the detective investigating a murder says it looked as if the killer had taken off his clothes and washed himself in in a lake after burying the body. That was enough for director John Tillenger to add the silent scene to the show. (The nude actor, incidentally, is a body double.)

US (Feb'99) Before Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker finally wed in May '97 (they dated for six years,) "people on the subway would ask me when I was getting married," Broderick has said. "Now people ask if we have a bun in the oven. I want to say, 'Listen, you don't know me.' But they sort of do."

10 Movies (other than "Star Wars") to look for in 1999, Daily News, 1/5/99: Election (April) - Alexander Payne directed "Citizen Ruth," a film about abortion that was one of the smartest satires in years. Which is why we're expecting a lot from "Election," a flick about the race for a high school class president based on a fine and funny novel by Tom Perrotta. With Reese Witherspoon ("Pleasantville") cast as the candidate who may just be a little too perfect. Sounds like it will appeal to teens and thinking adults - as if "Clueless" met "Bulworth."

World Entertainment News Network; 05-JAN-99:  DARK START FOR BRODERICK AND PARKER MATTHEW BRODERICK and his wife SARAH JESSICA PARKER did not plan on a romantic candlelight start to the New Year. The celebrity couple swapped the Hollywood highlife to travel to a remote village in the north west of Ireland to usher in 1999. But strong winds meant the GODZILLA star and his bride-of-a-year were left with no electricity for days. Parker explains, "At first it was incredibly romantic. We had the candles out, burning the peat turf. "But then we only had beans, which Matthew tried to heat up in the can on the fire, to eat and we soon ran out of peat turf. "Luckily our neighbours took pity and we took some lamb chops round to cook on their fired stove. So we didn't starve."

Parfitt in 'Fall' this Winter, Reuters, 21-OCT-98
NEW YORK (Variety) - Judy Parfitt, known for her movie roles in "Ever After," "Wilde" and "Dolores Claiborne," will star in the Broadway production of "Night Must Fall." The suspense drama, written in 1935 by Emlyn Williams, will get its first-ever Broadway revival at the Lyceum this winter. It centers on "a very handsome Irish young man (Matthew Broderick) who befriends and charms an older English woman (Parfitt) and her family; ultimately it's revealed that he could be a murderer," explained Fred Walker, managing director of the National Actors Theater, the play's producer. The role of the niece is as yet uncast, according to Walker, and it's not clear how much star wattage for the role will be sought. John Tillinger is attached to direct.

Marilyn Beck - NY Daily News - 9/2/98: Matthew Broderick is getting a workout - and then some - filming "Inspector Gadget." Broderick, who leads a cast that includes Rupert Everett, Joely Fisher and Andy Dick, spent last week shooting a scene that required him to hang upside down from wires. "You can't do that very long without getting nauseous unless you're a yoga peron," the actor lets us know. Is he a yoga person? "No." As the live action counterpart to the whimsical Disney cartoon character, Broderick has found himself in all sorts of "wacky positions." The trick-laden movie wraps in November. Then, reveals the double Tony winner, he'll jump back into "the adult world" - with a revival of Night Must fall in New York with Tony Randall's National Actors Theatre company. Rehearsals start in November for a January opening.
